Abstract
Based on the common objective of a group to understand the comparative between the mathematics teacher training programs that exist in the Central American region, this paper describes the case of Costa Rica in the last decade. To do this, a historical inquiry is carried out on the initial training of mathematics teachers, closing with the description of the origin and foundation of the Mathematics Education major at the University of Costa Rica. After referring to the initial training programs focused on Pedagogy and Mathematics that have existed in the country, some examples are given of how courses are developed under the initial training model focused on Mathematics Education. This work ends with reflections on the challenges to develop the Mathematics Education discipline in the country.
