Abstract
Introduction and objective. The incorporation and use of ICTs in the daily life of human beings has gained a lot of relevance, leading international organizations to deal with the detection and need to incorporate them in the field of education. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of application of ICTs by the professors of the theoretical courses of the Dentistry career at the UCR. Methods: A survey was carried out among all the coordinators of the theoretical courses of the curriculum of the Bachelor's Degree in Dentistry. The sociodemographic variables were (sex, age, department to which he/she belongs and degree of virtuality of the course) and those related to ICTs were use of the Web and its basic tools; search browsers; application management; use of videos; use of digital whiteboards; virtual and augmented reality; digital books; Chat GPT; management and use of cloud storage platforms; use of the Virtual Mediation management platform; management of social networks and the use of platforms for video conferencing. A Likert scale was used. Descriptive statistics were performed for all variables and the Chi-square test was performed for the bivariate analysis between the most used ICTs and the type of department, sex and age group. Results: There was a 94% response rate. The tools that had a very high degree of use in the courses were: the Virtual Mediation management platforms a repository of information (97.8%), Google's Chrome browser (73.9%), institutional email (60.9%) and social networks, especially WhatsApp (54.3%). A statistically significant difference was found regarding the use of didactic games and some aspects related to Virtual Mediation in relation to the type of department. Conclusion: ICTs are little used by the professors of the theoretical courses of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Costa Rica. The Social Dentistry department is the one that uses ICTs the most.
