Application of artificial intelligence for programming learning in higher education students

Abstract

This systematic review depicts potential uses, tools,and strategies to enhance programming learning in universitystudents pursuing technology-related fields like systemsengineering or computer science. The review explores thetechnical aspects, including types of tools, programs, and ArtificialIntelligence (AI) specifications proposed for technology-baseduniversity programs. A total of 113 records from 2018 to 2023were analyzed from IEEE Xplore database, with 41 recordsmeeting the inclusion criteria based on language, documentcompleteness, and the use of AI in higher education, A studypublished in Dialnet on the experience of a Costa Rican distancelearning university is also included. The study highlights that AIsupport in higher education is utilized in academic performanceprediction systems, evaluation and personalization of the learningprocess, and data analytics. The conclusions emphasize theimportance of ethically and responsibly integrating technologicaltools for AI in education, as well as reevaluating the role ofeducators and pedagogical mediation strategies.
