Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic implied mobilization and quarantine restrictions around the world, almost completely restricting the possibility of travel and tourism; this brought a series of socioeconomic implications in many countries such as Costa Rica, which depend heavily on tourism. The main objective of the study was to analyze the situation generated by the COVID-19 pandemic in the tourism sector of the Central and South Caribbean of the Limon province, considering the socioeconomic impact on the region and the strategies for reactivating tourism. The study resorted to a mixed approach methodology, an exploratory-descriptive design, where questionnaires and interviews were used as the main data collection techniques. Among the main results are the lack of support from the current government to the particular needs of tourism entrepreneurship; the particular characteristics of the studied regions mediated at the time of facing the crisis; tourism in the Matina area is highly vulnerable, and the recovery of the sector has a more accelerated pace than expected.
