Del monstruo-bestia al monstruo-individuo: Un estudio genealógico de la monstruosidad en las tradiciones narrativas

Abstract

El trabajo plantea un acercamiento a lo monstruoso, teniendo como norte especialmente las ficciones narrativas. Se inicia con la indagación genealógica del término teras-monstro para pasar de inmediato al tema de las metamorfosis, es decir, la transformación del humano en monstruo concentrándose en la figura y características del hombre-lobo como forma arquetípica. Posteriormente, el texto hace un viraje hacia el nacimiento del monstruo humano, ya no necesariamente como figura proveniente de la animalística sino como el monstruo-individuo, para cuya construcción imaginaria tanto a nivel social como narrativa la aparición de la máquina fotográfica hacia mediados del siglo XIX, fue decisiva. Por último, el estudio se aproxima a la importancia del romanticismo como movimiento cultural-artístico y su legado narrativo respecto del nacimiento de una serie de personajes que construyen y siembran las bases de buena parte de las formas monstruosas que consumimos en las ficciones narrativas de hoy.

This article approaches the monstrosity construction, but it mainly aims to narrative fictions. It starts with the genealogical inquiry of the concept terasmonstro to carry on with the topic of metamorphosis: the transformation of the human being in a monster form and the were-wolf as an archetype form. Afterwards, the text turns its attention to the birth of the human monster, not necessarily as a figure derived from animals, but as a person with inner qualities of monstrosity. The arrival of the photographic machine in the middle of the XIX Century was decisive for this change in the representation of the concept. Finally, the work draws near the importance of Romanticism as cultural-artistic movement, and it’s concerned with the birth of a series of characters that built up and plant the bases for an important part of monstrous figures that we consume in narrative fictions today.
