Abstract
Formal jazz refers to a musical style where elements of formal (academic or “classical”) music converge with jazz. This analytical research aims to answer the following question: How can formal-jazz repertoire be performed with appropriate aesthetics on the horn from an academic musical background? It is of interest to systematize the process of technical and stylistic approach to this repertoire, which presents formal structures characteristic of academic music and is conceived to be performed in concert halls, while employing the harmonic, melodic, and stylistic language of jazz. The development of this process will be based on the study of two prominent jazz musicians: Julius Watkins and Willie Ruff. Through transcription of their performances, a series of study processes will be generated to address the technical needs related to jazz, including extended techniques for the horn—phenomena that deviate from the canonical technique traditionally employed by horn players.
