Biopolítica del neón: la arquitectura de Las Vegas y la gestión lúdica de la vida

Abstract

En este artículo me interesa interrogar, a partir de un punto de vista basado en la genealogía foucaultiana, la dimensión paradigmática que la arquitectura de Las Vegas ha alcanzado hoy como forma de gestionar espacialmente la vida. Las Vegas se presenta como un enclave a partir del cual es posible leer el tránsito histórico de una biopolítica cuyo acento arquitectónico reposaba sobre el problema de la seguridad, a una en la cual prima la preocupación por cómo administrar de forma lúdica la vida. Inicialmente, el texto mapea las relaciones entre biopolítica y arquitectura. Posteriormente, se ocupa de rastrear las modificaciones históricas que los regímenes biopolíticos han sufrido de la mano del despegue de un capitalismo de la deuda. Por último, el artículo muestra los alcances que la arquitectura de Las Vegas ofrece en tanto dispositivo biopolítico y mecanismo de subjetivación, y argumenta que la condición neoliberal actual encuentra en dicha arquitectura del hedonismo su modelo de gubernamentalidad por excelencia.

In this article I am interested in interrogating, from a Foucauldian genealogical point of view, the paradigmatic dimension that the architecture of Las Vegas has reached today as a way of managing life. Las Vegas presents itself as an enclave from which it is possible to read the historic transit from biopolitics - which architectural accent laid on the problem of safety - to the main concern is how to manage life in a ludic way. Initially, the text maps the relations between biopolitics and architecture. Later, it takes care of tracking the historic modifications that the biopolitical regimes have suffered from the hand of the rise of a capitalism of debt. Finally, the article shows the reach that the architecture of Las Vegas offers as a biopolitical device and mechanism of subjectivation and argues why the current neoliberal condition finds in this architecture of hedonism its governance model by excellence.
