Aporte de la Banda de Conciertos de Limón en el rescate y difusión del calypso y el square dance

Abstract

El presente trabajo describe los aportes de la Banda de Conciertos de Limón (BCL) en el rescate y difusión de dos elementos del patrimonio cultural limonense como lo son el calypso y el square dance, en el período comprendido entre 2009 y 2013. Para ello, se consideraron aspectos relevantes del folclore afrolimonense, de la trayectoria de la BCL, así como antecedentes de estos dos géneros y su llegada a Limón. De esta manera se logró contextualizar y entender su desarrollo en la comunidad. Además, se propone entender la música afrolimonense como expresión cultural y como un canal de comunicación entre la BCL y el público.

This research describes the contributions made by the Banda de Conciertos de Limón (Limón Concert Band, BCL) in the preservation and exposure of the calypso and the square dance as two main elements of the musical heritage of this province, specifically during 2009 and 2013. Relevant features of the folklore of Limón and the trajectory of BCL were taking into account for this study, as well as the history of the arrival of these two musical genres to this province, in order to contextualize their development within the community. Also, this research proposes to understand the afro roots of Limon´s music not only as a cultural manifestation but also as a communication channel between BCL and its audiences.
