Se estudió el crecimiento y madurez sexual de Astyanax fasciatus en áreas someras del embalse Arenal, Costa Rica. La ecuación de Von Bertalanffy fue: Lt = 167.3 (1 - eH),0931 .0.131». El crecimiento promedio para los seis primeros meses fue de 11.7 rnrnImes, 6.9 rnrnImes para los seis meses siguientes, disminuyendo a 4 rnrnIrnes después de los doce meses de vida. La relación entre lomzitud total y peso se rige por la ecuación: P = 8.6 X 1.6 Lt31181 para machos y P = 1.8 X 10.6 LtJ,'3. para hembras. Tanto machos corno hembras, alcanzan la madurez sexnal a una Lt entre 70 a 80 mm, aproximadamente a los seis meses de edad. La especie se reproduce todo el año, con un pico de actividad entre los meses de julio a setiembre.
