La tardía epidemia de influenza o gripe ‘española’ y sus desenlaces en Costa Rica (1918-1920)

Abstract

La pandemia de influenza que afectó al planeta entre 1918 y 1920 constituyó un fenómeno transnacional, así como las estrategias científicas y técnicas para enfrentarla. No obstante, dependiendo del contexto de cada región y país, la epidemia de influenza presentó particularidades, al igual que las respuestas sociales e institucionales. El objetivo de este artículo es desentrañar mediante el empleo de fuentes de archivo, estadísticas, periodísticas e institucionales las especificidades socio históricas de Costa Rica, en los momentos previos, durante y después de la epidemia, con el fin de destacar los condicionamientos estructurales y la acción de los diversos actores sociales e institucionales frente a las dificultades generadas por la enfermedad.

The influenza pandemic that affected the planet between 1918 and 1920 was a transnational phenomenon, as were the scientific and technical strategies that addressed it. However, depending on the context of each region and country, the influenza pandemic presented diverse peculiarities and social and institutional responses. By using archival resources, statistics and journalistic and institutional reports, this article aims to unravel the socio-historical traits of Costa Rica before, during and after the epidemic, in order to highlight the structural constraints and the actions of different social and institutional actors facing the difficulties caused by the disease.
