Abstract
The Patient Navigation Program (PNP) was implemented in Costa Rica in 2012 to improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients by addressing barriers and long waiting times in the care process. The model is based on intersectoral articulation (civil society, academia, and health services) and incorporates volunteer navigators (survivors) who accompany, monitor, and resolve obstacles for patients. Results show high coverage (estimated at 95% of users in participating hospitals) and a reduction of 136 days in the total time of the care process. The PNP is established as an effective model for improving accessibility and mitigating inequities in cancer care.
