Disposición a pagar por los servicios veterinarios de vigilancia epidemiológica y bienestar animal en Costa Rica

Abstract

La disposición a pagar por un bien depende del precio y de diferentes variables relacionadas con el entorno del sujeto de estudio. Cuando no existe un mercado establecido y no se encuentran definidos los precios y la demanda, es necesario simular un mercado hipotético para calcular el monto máximo de dinero que pagarían las personas por el bien que reciben. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la disposición a pagar de los ciudadanos costarricenses por los servicios de vigilancia epidemiológica, la atención de desastres y el bienestar animal ejecutados por el Estado, a través de un enfoque de valoración contingente. Se aplicaron dos encuestas a una muestra final de 113 consumidores de diversa índole, se utilizaron modelos binarios probit y logit cuyas variables explicativas fueron el precio, el conocimiento, la opinión favorable, el ingreso, y la edad. Se estableció el precio de la disposición a pagar es de 39.46 USD en el modelo logit y de 39.26 USD en el modelo probit. Se concluyó que las personas valoran el hecho de estar protegidas de enfermedades zoonóticas que podrían afectar el bienestar social de la población, su percepción fue positiva hacia el bienestar animal y la atención de desastres en el ámbito productivo y doméstico.

The willingness to pay for a good depends on the price and on different variables related to the environment of the study subject. When there is no established market and prices and demand are not defined, it is necessary to simulate a hypothetical market to calculate the maximum amount of money that people would pay for the good they receive. The objective of this investigation was to determine the willingness to pay of Costa Rican citizens for the epidemiological surveillance services, disaster relief and animal welfare executed by the State, through a contingent valuation approach. Two surveys were applied to a final sample of 113 consumers of various kinds, using probit and logit binary models whose explanatory variables were price, knowledge, favorable opinion, income, and age. The willingness to pay price was set at $ 39.46 in the logit model and $ 39.26 in the probit model. It was concluded that people value the fact of being protected from zoonotic diseases that could affect the social welfare of the population and their perception was positive towards animal welfare and disaster response in the productive and domestic sphere.
