Abstract
This article analyzes youth’s participation and representation, defined as the population aged 18–35, in the 2024 Costa Rican municipal elections. Young people account for a significant share of the electoral roll (39.4%) and of the candidacies (28.4%), and although their presence among elected officials has increased, this paper questions whether such numerical growth has translated into real access to political power. This analysis focuses on the profiles of young candidates and, crucially, contrasts them with the profiles of those ultimately elected. The research answers key questions: Who are the young people competing? What positions do they aspire to and through which parties? And how do they differ from those who are elected? To address this issue the methodology is based on analyzing the profile of young candidates first, detailing which positions they aspired to and through which parties they did so, and then comparing this with the profile of elected officials.
