Abstract
Introducción. La hiperhidrosis primaria es una condición dermatológica caracterizada por sudoración excesiva focal o multifocal, que excede las necesidades fisiológicas de termorregulación. Su impacto en la calidad de vida es considerable y en Costa Rica el abordaje adecuado, así como el acceso a tratamientos eficaces, han sido históricamente limitados. Objetivo. Caracterizar el perfil epidemiológico, clínico y terapéutico de los pacientes con hiperhidrosis primaria atendidos en la Clínica de Toxina Botulínica del Hospital Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia entre agosto de 2024 y diciembre de 2024. Metodología. Estudio observacional, descriptivo y retrospectivo. Se revisaron expedientes médicos de 54 pacientes mayores de 12 años con diagnóstico de hiperhidrosis primaria, aplicando análisis estadístico descriptivo y pruebas de asociación. Resultados. La mayoría de los pacientes fueron mujeres jóvenes, con afectación axilar predominante. Además, un porcentaje significativo no había recibido tratamiento previo y, en algunos casos, se había indicado simpatectomía como primera opción terapéutica. Conclusión. Este estudio visibiliza la necesidad de actualizar los lineamientos institucionales para integrar a la Dermatología en el abordaje de esta patología, mejorar el acceso a tratamientos no invasivos y fomentar una detección oportuna en niveles de atención primaria.
Introduction: Primary hyperhidrosis is a dermatologic condition characterized by excessive sweating, either focal or multifocal, that surpasses thermoregulatory needs. Its impact on quality of life is considerable, and in Costa Rica, proper management and access to effective treatments have historically been limited. Objective: To characterize the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic profile of patients with primary hyperhidrosis treated at the Botulinum Toxin Clinic of the Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia Hospital between August and December 2024. Methods: Observational, descriptive, and retrospective study. Medical records of 54 patients over the age of 12 diagnosed with primary hyperhidrosis were reviewed. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed. Results: Most patients were young females, with axillary hyperhidrosis being the most common presentation. A significant proportion had not received any prior treatment, and in some cases, thoracic sympathectomy had been offered as an initial therapeutic option. Conclusion: The findings highlight the need to update national protocols to allow dermatologists to treat hyperhidrosis cases, expand access to non-invasive therapies, and strengthen early detection in primary care settings.
