Predictores de la mediación parental del uso de la Internet de niños y adolescentes y su asociación con las oportunidades y riesgos de dicho uso

Abstract

Se indaga en predictores del tipo de mediación parental del uso de la Internet, en particular, edad, género, nivel educativo, residencia, habilidades digitales y percepción del riesgo de las personas cuidadoras, junto con variables vinculadas a las personas menores (edad, género y habilidades digitales). Asimismo, se estimó el efecto predictor de los tipos de mediación sobre las oportunidades y riesgos de contacto, considerando además las variables anteriormente señaladas. Los datos se tomaron de la Encuesta Kids Online Costa Rica, aplicada a una muestra compuesta por 1008 personas cuidadoras (edad promedio = 40,46; 78,9 % mujeres) y 1008 niñas, niños y adolescentes (NNA) entre 9 y 17 años (M = 12,75; 50,6 % mujeres). Resultados: las habilidades digitales y la edad de la NNA son predictores relevantes del tipo de mediación; la mediación activa predice las oportunidades, la mediación restrictiva reduce las posibilidades de riesgo, mientras que la mediación por monitoreo parece aplicarse ante la presencia de riesgo.

Predictors of the type of parental mediation of Internet use were investigated, in particular, age, gender, educational level, residence, digital skills and caregivers' risk perception, together with variables related to minors (age, gender and digital skills). Likewise, the predictive effect of the types of mediation on the opportunities and risks of contact was estimated, also considering the aforementioned variables. e data were taken from the Kids Online Costa Rica Survey, applied to a sample composed of 1008 caregivers (average age = 40,46; 78,9% female) and 1008 children and adolescents between 9 and 17 years of age (M = 12,75; 50,6% female). Results: digital skills and age of the child are relevant predictors of the type of mediation; active mediation predicts opportunities, restrictive mediation reduces the chances of risk, while monitoring mediation seems to be applied in the presence of risk.
