Abstract
The objective of this research was to learn about the population's current perception of telecommunications and it’s support infrastructure, inquiring how essential this service has become for the population, as a support in the provision of health services, education, emergency care and even in the economy. The research was carried out at the Turrialba canton, since this territory combines both urban and rural areas in a particular scenario of hazards that allow for the representation of Costa Rica's geography. Methodologically, a geographic study was proposed, starting with a biophysical diagnosis of the environment where telecommunication towers have been installed, and the characterization of the distribution of the telecommunication network, followed by the perception of the telecommunication service by the local population through surveys and interviews with key informants. Once the data collection and analysis phase was completed, a series of guidelines and strategies were proposed from a geographic perspective, as a contribution to decision making to ensure in time and space, the essential services provided by telecommunications in Turrialba’s canton. These proposed guidelines are complemented by a series of conclusions and recommendations, the main one being that the geographic focus of this research has the virtue of integrating both biophysical and technological variables, making it possible to identify a series of essential elements in the canton's territorial planning.
