“Prayer for Marilyn Monroe” by Ernesto Cardenal: On the construction of a pragmatic character

Abstract

The poem Oración por Marilyn Monroe, byErnesto Cardenal, was written after this famous NorthAmerican actress' death. Using a prayer as a structure,the poet moves the reader to wonder about differentsocial questions. The article studies the structure, theparticipants and the different literary methods that areused for constructing this poem. Especially, it refers tothe elements that contribute to the pragmatic characterof the text and their effect on the reader.El poema Oración por Marilyn Monroe, de Ernesto Cardenal, fue escrito tras la muerte de esta famosa actriz norteamericana. Utilizando una oración como estructura, el poeta mueve al lector a preguntarse acerca de diversas cuestiones sociales. El artículo estudia la estructura, los participantes y los distintos recursos literarios que se utilizan para construir este poema. Especialmente, se refiere a los elementos que aporta el carácter pragmático al texto y el efecto que crean en el lector.
