In this research, implicit associations between prototypes of emotions and music of positive and negative valence
were studied. For this purpose, a modified version of the Implicit Association Test was developed. Participants were
59 university students between 18 and 23 years old (56 % female). Results showed that participants categorized
adjectives associated with emotions as joy or sadness more rapidly when these adjectives were congruently
associated with fast tempo or slow tempo music, respectively. Implications for the study of the emotional processing
of music and the prototupical frame work of emotions are discussed.
