Fractional nitrogen fertilization in strawbery (Fragaria ananassa). Fertilizer applications were made o strawberry cultivars Tioga and Sequia, at rates of 0,75, 150, 225 and 300 kg/ha, each splitted into four equal fractions applied at bimonthy intervals. Test plants were one year old, growing at 1650m elevation at the Fraujanes Sub-Station of the Fabio Baudrit Experiment Station, University of Costa Rica. Monthly data on number and weight of fruits, as well as yearly totals, were collected and analysed as a split plot design. After one year’s havest (July 1980 – July 1981), there were no significant differences in yield or fruit number among fertilizer dosage treatmets, but cv. Tioga outyielded Sequoia by 40% (74, 5 vs 41,5 ton/ha/year); fruit numbers were 3762 and 1520 per 2.88 m² although weights were 5.7 and 7.9 g/fruit, respectively.
