Abstract

In Grecia, Costa Rica, two bean crops (cultivars Huetar IIa, Brunca IIIa, México 29-N and Alajuela 1 IIIb) were tested in association with one vegetative cycle of maize (cultivar Tico V-1, short plant) This system was compared with the maize-bean association under only one cycle. The maize yield was the same when planted in association with beans in one or two cycles, but was 28% lower in relay planting. A differencial behavoir was found among bean cultivars and planting systems. Likewise, the maize was afffected by all bean cultivars in association planting. The Huetar cultivar was the best under association planting, for its high yield and for allowing the highest maize yield. México 29-N showed the highest yield under the relay planting system.
