La excelencia académica en las carreras universitarias.

Abstract

El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar, a partir de un enfoque cualitativo, cómo conceptualizan, estudiantes y docentes, la excelencia académica en las carreras universitarias, concretamente en la Escuela de Administración de Negocios (EAN) de la Universidad de Costa Rica y cómo esta incide en la competitividad del futuro graduado. La metodología empleada consistió, en primera instancia, en la revisión bibliográfica sobre el tema, que facilitó los principales postulados teóricos planteados, en el marco de las políticas mundiales, por el Banco Mundial, la UNESCO y otros foros internacionales; con el fin de compararlos con los datos recolectados durante la investigación. El siguiente paso fue la recolección de datos que se realizó en la EAN, mediante la observación participativa (talleres y entrevistas) de los sujetos participantes (estudiantes y docentes). Esta tarea se realizó en dos etapas. En la primera, se organizaron y analizaron, por un proceso de deducción y inducción, los datos recopilados entre los estudiantes, a quienes se les plantearon cinco preguntas: cómo perciben la misión de la UCR, cómo perciben los objetivos de la EAN, cómo relacionan la misión de la UCR con los objetivos de la EAN, cómo describen su crecimiento intelectual y cómo definen el término excelencia. En la segunda, se entrevistó a los docentes de la EAN sobre cuáles eran sus percepciones acerca del desempeño docente, el concepto de "docente universitario" y el concepto de "excelencia académica". De este estudio de desprende la necesidad de una mejora educativa que garantice a los estudiantes una educación integral que favorezca su inmersión en la realidad económica, social y cultural del país, lo cual posibilitaría la competitividad del futuro graduado.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to determine, from a qualitative approach, how students and teachers conceptualize academic excellence in university careers, specifically in the School of Business Administration (EAN) of the University of Costa Rica and how it affects the competitiveness of the future graduate. The methodology used consisted, in the first instance, in the bibliographic review on the subject, which facilitated the main theoretical postulates raised, within the framework of world policies, by the World Bank, UNESCO and other international forums; in order to compare them with the data collected during the investigation. The next step was the data collection that was carried out in the EAN, through participatory observation (workshops and interviews) of the participating subjects (students and teachers). This task was carried out in two stages. In the first, the data collected among the students were organized and analyzed, through a process of deduction and induction, who were asked five questions: how do they perceive the mission of the UCR, how do they perceive the objectives of the EAN, how do they relate the mission of the UCR with the objectives of the EAN, how to describe its intellectual growth and how to define the term excellence. In the second, EAN teachers were interviewed about their perceptions of teacher performance, the concept of "university teacher" and the concept of "academic excellence". This study shows the need for an educational improvement that guarantees students a comprehensive education that favors their immersion in the economic, social and cultural reality of the country, which would enable the future graduate's competitiveness.
