Abstract
The lethal activity of venoms from six viperid snake species found in Ecuador was determined in CD-1 mice. Venoms of Bothrops asper from different localities of the country, adults and juvenile individuals, were included. Results showed important variations in the lethal activity of the venoms, both at the interspecific and intraspecific level, the latter related to factors such as individual variability, geographic origin, or age of snakes. These differences could be associated with variations in the protein composition of venoms, and could be of relevance in the selection of samples for the production and control of therapeutic antivenoms.
