The Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank of the University of Costa Rica has more than 15 years of experience in quality management under the ISO management model, which is complementary to EFQM, since the former ensures technical competence, while the latter seeks a more comprehensive management of the organization's processes, not only to achieve positive returns, but also to innovate and generate a culture of transformation towards excellence. In the present investigation, opportunities for laboratory improvement were identified in the EFQM management model, which were classified according to their impact on the quality management system. With this classification, roadmaps were structured to formulate an improvement plan for the upper management of this laboratory. Thanks to the maturity of the quality management system, the Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank of the University of Costa Rica presents an advance of 44% in the EFQM model. 29 improvement opportunities were found to implement the entire model. These opportunities were divided into three implementation stages guided by roadmaps. This project will be executed within the framework of the formulation and monitoring of the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan and will take a period of 4 years to complete.
