Mercados locales de drogas ilícitas en Costa Rica: Claves analíticas para su comprensión

Abstract

El artículo analiza la comercialización al detalle de crack, cocaína y marihuana en Costa Rica, a fin de brindar elementos conceptuales para su entendimiento. Tres son las ideas principales a desarrollar. Primero, que este fenómeno puede analizarse en términos de transacciones mercantiles, lo cual permite visualizar que se trata de una actividad inmersa en un proceso glocal y que su funcionamiento responde a reglas claramente identificables. Segundo, que la venta de sustancias prohibidas representa para sus protagonistas una práctica social orientada a obtener los recursos necesarios para disputar un lugar en la sociedad; esto significa que no se trata solo de buscar acceso a ganancias materiales sino también, y sobre todo, simbólicas; en concreto, prestigio y reconocimiento. Tercero, que, si bien la violencia ejercida por los comerciantes de drogas ilícitas desempeña una función central para el negocio, esto es, defender la mercancía y el mercado ante posibles competidores, su verdadera relevancia, para quienes la utilizan, consiste en reivindicar el honor, la hombría y los compromisos morales adquiridos con socios, parientes y amigos.

The main purpose of this article is to provide conceptual elements to understand the dynamics of local commercialization of small doses of crack, cocaine, and marijuana in Costa Rica. Three are the key ideas of the paper. First, market category is a powerful tool to understand these economic transactions mainly for two reasons. On one hand, because it allow us to visualize that such industry is part of a bigger business and as such, it needs to be understood within the glocal chain where it takes place. On the other hand, it helps us to comprehend that, as in any other market, there are rules structuring its functioning. Second, drug selling represents for its protagonists a social practice oriented to obtain the necessary resources to dispute a place in society; this means that this activity is not only about seeking access to material gains but also, and above all, symbolic ones; specifically, prestige and recognition. Third, violence serves as a structural mechanism to regulate these markets. However, the real meaning it has for its protagonists is to honor the moral commitments they have acquired with colleagues, friends and kin.
