Un antes y después en el sitio arqueológico Alto del Cardal: una revisión de los recientes trabajos en las laderas del volcán Irazú, Valle Central, Costa Rica

Abstract

El presente trabajo pretende ser una revisión de los recientes trabajos efectuados en el sitio Alto del Cardal, partiendo de la investigación pionera efectuada por el arqueólogo nacional Carlos Aguilar Piedra en las faldas del volcán Irazú, en los años sesenta. El reconocimiento y las excavaciones puntuales de Aguilar intentaban ayudar en la formulación futura de la secuencia cronológica para el Valle Central. No obstante, aunque pionero, el estudio de Aguilar en el Cardal dejó grandes vacíos de información sobre los grupos que habitaron la zona; motivando a que se retomaran y afinaran sus investigaciones. Las investigaciones desarrolladas posteriormente en el sitio incluyeron como objetivo general la caracterización y funcionamiento del lugar en la historia precolombina de la zona. Para lo anterior, se desarrollaron una serie de visitas a los alrededores del sitio, una prospección sistemática y excavaciones puntuales para entender la cronología y la ubicación espacial del asentamiento, así como el funcionamiento social. La investigación en el Cardal nos mostró un sitio ubicado estratégicamente para la movilización de artefactos y personas entre la Vertiente Atlántica y el Valle Central, una profundidad cronológica diferente a lo que se creía para el sitio. El presente trabajo es una recopilación de los antiguos y recientes trabajo en el Cardal. Fue una búsqueda de información de archivo en el Laboratorio de Arqueología de la Universidad de Costa Rica y de la información recopilada alrededor de estos años por medio de las investigaciones realizadas en el sitio.

The present work is a review of the recent research carried out at the Alto del Cardal (a.k.a El Cardal) site, based on the pioneering research carried out by the Costa Rican archaeologist Carlos Aguilar Piedra, at the foothills of the Irazú Volcano, especially the work that took place at the archaeological site of Alto del Cardal during the sixties. The inspection and excavations by Aguilar sought to formulate a chronological sequence for the Central Valley. However, although pioneering, Aguilar's work at El Cardal left large information voids regarding the social groups that inhabited the area, which motivated a revisit and refinement to his work. The research conducted has had the objective of characterizing and establishing the function of this site during Precolumbian times. To accomplish this, a series of visits took place, which included a systematic survey and precise excavations in order to understand the chronology and spatial location of the settlement. The research at El Cardal showed a site that was strategically located in order to mobilize artifacts and people between the Atlantic Watershed and the Central Valley, and that had a chronological depth that differed from what was initially thought. This is an account of old and new work at El Cardal, which implied archival research at the Archaeology Laboratory of the University of Costa Rica and of the information gathered recently by the new investigations at the site.
