| dc.description | Between 1940 and 1974, the celebration of Nicoya’s annexation had a nationwide expansion and grew as a national event, caused mainly by the growth of the Welfare State, and the official declaration of its celebration as a national holiday. In this paper, we determined the motivations for converting the annexation’s celebration into a national holiday, we established the links between this process and the regionalist discourses that existed in Guanacaste, and establish how identified was the general population of Costa Rica with the new national holiday. In order to do this, we analyzed the discourses of articles that were broadcast in some of the principal newspapers in the country, and a regional one; in which we havefound the main scenarios, subjects, and arguments of this process. We found that this expansion intended first, to appease the discourses that supported the arguments that Guanacaste was the “Cinderella” of CostaRica because it was a neglected region in economic, social and political terms. Second, the Welfare State needed physical and media tribunes to spread its support for some predominant agricultural activities inthe province, and try to better position its image in the country. The sesquicentennial celebration of the annexation, in 1974, was a milestone in the deployment that this was achieved in Guanacaste, however, showed that it was still not consolidated with the desired intensity in the rest of the country. | en |
| dc.description | Entre 1940 y 1974, se le dio el impulso definitivo a la fiesta de la anexión del partido de Nicoya a Costa Rica para su expansión a nivel nacional; fundamentalmente a partir del crecimiento del Estado gestor y de la declaración de Fiesta Nacional, en 1956. En este trabajo, determinamos cuáles fueron las motivaciones para convertir las celebraciones de la anexión en una fiesta nacional, entablamos cuáles nexos se dieron entre dicho proceso y los discursos regionalistas que existían en Guanacaste, y establecemos cuál fue la profundidad que alcanzó el arraigo de la población con la fiesta en el país. Para ello, analizamos los discursos y las notas informativas que fueron difundidos en dos de los principales periódicos nacionales y en uno regional; y extrajimos los principales escenarios, actores, y argumentos. Encontramos que tal expansión pretendió, por un lado, apaciguar el discurso que sostenía que Guanacaste era “la cenicienta” de Costa Rica porque padecía del abandono económico estatal y de la indiferencia de la nación. Por el otro lado, el Estado gestor tenía la necesidad de contar con tribunas tanto físicas como mediáticas para difundir su apoyo a algunos sectores productivos agropecuarios en la provincia, y tratar de posicionar mejor su imagen en el país. La celebración del sesquicentenario de la anexión, en 1974, fue un hito del despliegue que esta había alcanzado en Guanacaste; sin embargo, reflejó que aún seguía sin consolidarse con la intensidad deseada en el resto del país. | es-ES |
