Abstract
We report the first documented and photographed record of the Flesh-footed Shearwater (Ardenna carneipes) in Costa Rica and the Eastern Tropical Pacific. The bird was observed on January 10, 2025, over the Middle America Trench, feeding among a mixed-species flock associated with spotted dolphins. Identification was confirmed through field marks, photographs, and expert consultation. This Near Threatened species breeds in the South Pacific and migrates northward. The finding highlights the ecological importance of Costa Rica’s offshore waters as habitat and migratory corridors for pelagic seabirds and underscores the value of continued oceanic monitoring in the region.
