Abstract
This article proposes an analysis of two short stories by Guatemalan writers: “El pájaro de fuego” (The Firebird) by Andrea Morales and “Más allá del sol” (Beyond the Sun) by Denise Phé-Funchal. The objective is to examine the violence suffered by the female characters, from the perspective of performativity and ritual in dialogue with memory as a form of resistance against the biopolitical power of control over bodies in intimate spaces. These literary texts construct two testimonies of abuse and rape (Segato) that are recounted, as a form of testimony, by grandmothers to their granddaughters, who constitute the narrative voice. Based on Pilar Calveiro’s notions of testimony and memory, a form of resistance is configured that is performative. In this way, the stories reveal a ritual of resistance that breaks with family silences in the face of the abuse of women’s bodies.
