Nicaragua rebelde y reprimida, 2018
Abstract
This essay describes popular rebellions in Nicaragua after April of 2008. It briefly explores Daniel
Ortega’s rise to power in 2007 and frames it within the successful political campaign of leftist political
parties in all Latin America while it also shows Nicaragua’s rightist failures, particularly that of the Partido
Liberal. Moreover, this essay explains how Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo were able to create an
economic empire in Nicaragua by destroying democratic institutions and concentrating political power.
This essay finishes describing some of the popular mobilizations against Ortega’s government that have
taken place in Nicaragua between April and December of 2018 and the regimen’s fierce repression.
