The growth pattern of the sweet pepper plants cultivar UCR-589, was analyzed from May through November 1995, in Alajuela, Costa Rica. A Complete Randomized Block experimental design with four replications was used, in which the treatments corresponded to the sampling epochs. The sampling was conducted every 14 days, starting when the seedling emergence reached 85% (26 days after planting-DAP), from eight central plants of the useful plot. The foliar area and dry weight of each plant section (root, aerial part, flower and fruit) were measured, variables used to determine the physiological and morphological indexes. The plant showed a sigmoidal growth curve, with the following stages: a. From 26 to 82 DAP; this stage was characterized by a slow growth, due to the fact that the plant was small and its root and foliar systems were just starting to develop. b. From 83 to 138 DAP: Comprises the phase of rapid vegetative and reproductive growth. c. From 139 through 152 DAP: the growth rate gradually decreases. d. From 153 to 166 DAP: period in which the plant reaches maturity and the growth rates tend to stabilize. e. From 167 to 180 DAP: the plant shows signs of senescence and the dry matter content decreases. The biomass production is linked to the phenology of the plant, specially at blooming and fruiting. The plant invests more photo assimilates on fruits production than on the vegetative parts. Besides, the plant limits its vegetative growth when fruiting starts, specially when the fruits present the highest growth rates.en_US
