Fourteen pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) genotypes were tested in relation to its adaptation and yield, for the export market, at the Fabio Baudrit Experimental Station in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The experiment was conducted from November of 1985 to July 1986. A Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications was used. The useful plot was of 13 m2 and the population density of 20,000 plants per hectare. The genotypes that produced the highest commercial yield were PSR 1105, VR- 2 and PSR 9983, with 22.49, 20.85 and 18.72 t/ha, respectively. Nine of the tested genotypes met the export requirements as to fruit, shape and size (Gator Bell, Early Calwonder, Jupiter, Valley Giant, Bell Boy, Yolo Wonder, California Wonder, VR-2 and Titan). The outstanding genotypes were VR-2 and Jupiter, with the highest average fruit weights, besides of showing tolerance to the basal rot. The remaining genotypes could be a good alternative for the local market, mainly the genotypes PSR 1104, PSR 1105 and Tropical Irazu, because of their tolerance to diseases and good yield.en_US
