The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of halosulfuron in the control of purple nutsedge. Two greenhouse experiments were established in the Fabio Baudrit Experimental Station, Alajuela, Costa Rica, during the months of April and May of 2004. Five rates of halosulfuron (0, 0.025, 0.050, 0.075 and 0.100 kg ia/ha) were applied at preemergence on two purple nutsedge growing stages: 3 to 4 leaves and 5 to 6 leaves. This experiment was repeated in the field in a melon farm during the months of May and June of the 2004, where a double application of halosulfuron (pre + post at 3-4 leaves) was evaluated, at the rates of 0,050 + 0,050 and 0,050 + 0,075 kg/ha. In the pre applications, in the greenhouse as well as in the field, the greater damage to purple nutsedge (>88 %) was reached three weeks after the application, with all the rates evaluated. In post- emergence, control was faster with the applications made on plants with 3-4 leaves in comparison with plants with 5-6 leaves, and with the greater dose of the herbicide. In the field, the post applications reduced significantly the number of plants of purple nutsedge by a period of four weeks, and all plants sprayed died after six weeks. It was possible to maintain good control of the weed for eight weeks with a double application of halosulfuron.en_US
