Prevalence and geographic distribution of principal viruses PYX, PVY, PVA, PVM, PVS and PLRV in potato in Costa Rica. Potato leaf samples were collected during the period from February to August 1997 in the northern zone of the Cartago province, the main area of potato production in Costa Rica. Terminal leaves were collected from 30 plants in each of 36 fields located at altitudes between 1400 and 3000 masl. Samples were analyzed for the presence of potato viruses X, Y, A, M, S and potato leafroll virus (PLRV) by DAS-ELISA. At least one virus was detected in all of the fields included in the study, with an average of 3 viruses present in individual fields. PYX was the most prevalent and was detected in 92% of the fields, followed by PLRV(72%), PVY(56%), PVM (56%), PVA(52%) and PVS (14%). The prevalence of each virus was similar at different altitudes.
