Based Guidelines for Designers, Teachers, and Policy Change(2023) Rojas Alfaro, Roberto Enrique; Montenegro Sánchez, Ana MarcelaThis study is a branch of a larger research project on the design process of FUNREAD, an online learning platform, co-designed with English language teachers (ELTs), that promotes linguistic and sociocultural learning among sixth-grade English language learners (ELLs) from rural communities in Costa Rica. This paper sheds light on the necessity of human-centered design (HCD) when creating teaching materials for online learning platforms. HCD—an approach where “human values are primary and should guide the world that people collectively create (Zachry & Spyridakis, 2016, p. 394)—is central to this study. Through that lens, we analyze participants’ insights and suggestions for improving an existing concept in priority areas (e.g., equity, representation, and language learning). Equally, contextualizing teaching materials and available technologies to match the demographic characteristics of school children is indispensable for success. The interaction of science and religion: an update on the conflict(2015-09) Aragón Vargas, Luis FernandoIn this discussion of the interaction between science and religion, I review some evidence for and against the conflict thesis to show that there is no inherent contradiction between them, but rather an expected tension. I analyze why it is not desirable or even possible to keep these two cultural forces strictly independent from each other, even though it is important to understand and respect their distinctive elements and methods. I discuss two general approaches to the integration of religion and science and argue why both are doomed to cause more harm than good. Finally, I present a model for dialogue between these disciplines and for the integration of both areas in the life of each individual scientist.Ítem La magia metonímica en Cuentos de angustias y paisajes de Carlos Salazar Herrera(2023) Herrera Ávila, TatianaEste artículo se concentra en analizar la construcción y la función de la metonimia en los Cuentos de angustias y paisajes (1990) de Carlos Salazar Herrera. To do this, we start from the fact that the text is characterized by being spatial, in Kayser's terms, to later demonstrate, that is thanks to this that space is formed as the axis of the stories, since it is through this trope that the character-space relationship is achieved. Then, we propose that it is through the use of metonomy and prayer, as well as the literary resource orf the cathalysys, that the rhetoric of silence is build.Ítem Strengthening one’s socio-cultural skills in a foreign language through video conferencing(2017) Vásquez Carranza, Luz Marina; Ramírez Casalvolone, Natalia; Fernández Abarca, MarianellaThe use of different technological aids in educational settings such as the video conferencing equipment has increased throughout the last years. This article reports the benefits that a group of twenty-four advanced in-training English as a Foreign Language teaching students at University of Costa Rica (UCR) have gained through their participation in the Global Classroom Project. This project, which was created by University of Nebraska at Lincoln back in 2005, started to be implemented at UCR, Western Site in 2010 and it aims to connect students from several countries synchronously through the use of video conferencing equipment to provide its participants an opportunity to discuss and exchange information on socio-cultural topics by using English as a tool of communication. Qualitative and quantitative techniques were applied to collect the data for the study. The research revealed that although UCR students reported high levels of anxiety during their participation in the project, they felt highly confident and motivated to take part in the project as they felt proud to present about Costa Rican culture to a group of college native-speakers of English. In terms of learning of vocabulary, the study revealed new words which students argue helped them to better understand the topics under study. Yet, the greatest benefit was the socio-cultural knowledge gained by the participants as they could confront the stereotypical views of the foreign language culture portrayed on mass media and redefine their views and perceptions based on the information provided by UNL students. Our hope is that as future EFL teachers, participating students from UCR will reproduce this way of learning socio-cultural aspects by using the English language as a vehicle of communication.Ítem Tacit Significance, Explicit Irrelevance: The Use of Language and Silence in The Caretaker and The Dumb Waiter(Revista de Lenguas Modernas, número 16, 2012-06) Saravia Vargas, Juan CarlosReaders who approach the Theater of the Absurd face complex interpretive problems. The style of Harold Pinter, the laureate British playwright, adds an additional difficulty due to his particular use of language. His plays The Caretaker and The Dumb Waiter show how speech is overshadowed by silence, which provides a more direct access to the tortured psyche of characters.
