Ítem A vision of a competency-based approach in technical training of the librarian(2011-01-01 00:00:00) Briceño Álvarez, IriaThis essay intends to show the importance of the contribution that the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have provided to the services of the Information Units and how it has been necessary to innovate in order to give the user a service according to their needs. It is aimed at teachers and students of library science, curriculum designers and people interested in implementing a curriculum with a focus on library skills. This work focuses on the role of teachers in a curriculum by competencies, as well as the descriptions of the skills that the librarian has to acquire in accordance with the use and management of ICT services in libraries. Some of the referral services that can be performed on virtually by the information units using ICT are presented. Also, a description of the skills that students must achieve to implement these services is given. To exemplify some of these services hyperlinks to the pages of library or services mentioned are presented.Ítem Bibliometric study of the work of Costa Rican naturalist Anastasio Alfaro and Henri Pittier in journals between 1887 and 1946 Costa Rican(2011-01-01 00:00:00) González Pérez, EstebanThis paper analyzes the productivity of the naturalists Anastasio Alfaro and Henri Pittier in a period of 59 years, time in which the two authors published 316 articles in various Costa Rican sources. Several metrics methods were applied to these items, such as productivity and collaboration of the authors, Bradford’s Law and average life. Furthermore, the keywords were analyzed in order to identify the areas in which both authors primarily published their works. We conclude that these two authors remained very active in their years of research. They are considered the major producers of Lotka productivity index and had very limited cooperation of other authors in their publications. It describes the proposal of a new type of curriculum that better fulfills the actual needs and demands of the profession. Furthermore, it addresses issues pertaining to the Scientific Knowledge System of Library Information which is composed by the disciplines of Library Science, Bibliographology, Archival and Information Science. Finally, a look at the proposal for a transdisciplinary relations model that will serve as the basis for the design of the new curriculum.Ítem Virtual Library of Population and Health at Central American Population Center(2011-01-01 00:00:00) Chinchilla Arley, RicardoThe Population and Health Virtual Library constitute a great institutional effort, directed to the intensive dissemination of information in the area of health and demography of an organized form. This document describes the precedents of a project, which was relying on an enormous quantity of disorganized information, which was impeding the access to the same one. This problematic justified the accomplishment and investment in the project, with the final idea of democratizing the access to the above mentioned information, trying to organize efficiently and to transmit it for electronic means. Also it presents the components of the project divided in products, services and resources of information. It ends up by exposing the results obtained up to the moment, as well as an evaluation of the problems that they have presented and some solutions.
