An Experiment was conducted during the dry season March-May 1990) for controlling weeds in melon, ainly Cyperus rotundus, under a melon-rice rota on system in Parrita-Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The erbicides tested were EPTC, metolachlor, bensulide and pebulate before planting and incorporated at 5 cm deep a post-emergent (glyphosate) at the rates of 2, and 6 kg/ha applied at 1, 15 and 30 days before planting (DBP), and a control (hand weeding). It was determined that pebulate and metolachlor controlled C. rotundus at the rate of kg/ha, applied at 15 and 1 DBP, respectively. Nonetheless, metolachlor was phytotoxic to the melon also showing a lower ground-coverage percentage around the plant at 45 days after planting DAP). The EPTC and glyphosate were less effective controlling the cyperaceous and were not phytotoxic to the crops, allowing a larger coverage but Producing a smaller number of set fruits. Bensulide showed a defficient cyperaceous control, not differing from the control (hand weeding), aIthough a larger number of set fruits was obtained with bensulide. The lowest cyperaceous and gramineous weights were obtained when the treatents were applied 1 DBP, the lowest cyperaceous density was obtained when applied 15 and 1 DBP, and 1 DBP for the gramineous. No residues were determined of the herbicides EPTC pebulate or metolachlor in ripe fruits.en_US
