Two experiments were conducted, during the months of December and January of 1989-1990 and 1990-1991, at the Fabio Baudrit Experiment Station in Alajuela, Costa Rica to evaluate the performance of several pre-emergent herbicides and their effect on an established asparagus plantation, during the harvesting season. The herbicides used in the first trial were: diuron (1.25 kg a. i./ha), metribuzin (0,75 kg a. i./ha), napropamide (4.0 kg a. i./ha), linuron, simazine and norfluorazon at the rate of 1.5 kg a. i./ha, besides of including an unweeded control. The best weed controlling herbicides in this first experiment were selected to be used in the second assay, in which linuron at the rates of 1.0 and 2.0 kg a. i./ha, metribuzin at 0.5 and 0.9 kg a. i./ha, simazine at 1.5 and 2.5 kg a. i./ha were applied, including also an unweeded and a weeded controls. There were no phytotoxicity symptoms in either experiment. Some differences in yield were observed, although there was no evidence that it was due to the treatments. The three herbicides used in the second trial, at both rates, showed a good control of broad-leaf and gramineous weeds, enough to keep the crop free of weed even after the harvesting period. An analysis for detecting chemical residues was conducted on the spears from the treatments using linuron. The chemical was found during the first seven days after its application in the treatment at 2.0 kg a. i./ha, although such residues were lower than the level allowed by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) of United States of America.en_US
